Mother, May I?

In my dreams, we danced all night long.

Gems of all colors dangled from Carmen’s dress. When she swayed, they clinked together and made the sweetest song. When I spun her around, the dress chimed into the wind.

Blood red roses surrounded the room and spread their perfume into the space. Candles sparkled between them, spreading a dim light throughout this empty ballroom where our shadows danced on the high walls.

Music played, but I couldn’t figure out what type. In one minute, violins swooned. In the next, an electric guitar blared.

We laughed and swirled around the room. Our bodies spiraled over and over, reminding me of those twisting teacups at Disney. I’d loved them so; every time Mom took me.

Turning and turning, we were giddy with each other. Lost in the moment of us. Our lips collided into a wet feast. Our fingers slipped against flesh.

“I love you,” I whispered.

Carmen rested her head on my chest. “I love you too.”

“Aww.” I tightened my hold on her, scared that she’d run away. “Finally, you tell me this? It took all of this time for you to admit it.”

“I didn’t know either.”

I ran my fingers through her hair. “But now that you know, what will we do?”

“Well, you still have issues. We can’t forget that.”

“Issues?” I stopped our dancing and leaned back to get a look at her. “What issues do I have?”

“You know.” She pulled away from me. With each inch of her leaning back, her skin lightened from brown to pale white. The contours of her face reshaped. Her hair transformed from thick curls to silky strands. The color changed to my own color.

I held breath, understanding what was happening. “No. Please, just give me this one dream. Please.”

“But then how will we address your issues?” My mom stared back at me, wearing Carmen’s dress. “You were always such a good boy.”

I closed my eyes and screamed.
